A name should be unique, meaning it should be unclaimed by existing companies in the Companies House database. The name should not be similar to or the same as the registered company names. If you go by a name that is ‘too like’ to the existing company names, and the business owner finds out, you will be forced to change it.
Private company names must end with the structures abbreviation ‘Ltd’ or in full ‘limited’. While that is for a private company, public companies’ names must end with ‘PLC’ and ‘Public Limited Company’. ‘LLP’ or ‘Limited Liability Partnership’ for registered partnerships and ‘Cyfyngedig’ or ‘Cyf’ in Welsh.
Sensitive words are terms that insinuate a connection with the royal family, government, and chartered institutions. These words include Banks, Her Majesty, King, Queen, British, Police, Government, Parliament, Insurance, Association, Foundation, Trust, England, and English among others. You must get authorisation or permission to include sensitive words in your company name. When registering your limited company, you must provide supporting documents.
Some characters and symbols are not permissible to use in a company name. You can use the standard symbols and punctuation in a standard keyboard, which include: #, .,:,;, and -. For instance, you cannot use a heart symbol in a company name, but you can use the word ‘heart’ in the company name.
